The Slice: As protective dogs go, she’s in the honor guard

Friendly guard dog: Greg Staples and Holly.

When I asked readers to name the area’s friendliest guard dog, I was mostly kidding.

But I got some pretty good answers. Consider, for instance, this one from Greg Staples.

“I’d like to nominate my ‘baby,’ Holly. My wife, Carol, bought her as a Christmas present for me.

“She is the fifth Great Pyrenees we have had as a couple in our 41 years together. Our first Pyr saved Carol and our daughter from a home invasion attempt when she appeared and growled as a person tried to force his way in after Carol opened the door late one evening while I was still at work. The ‘perp’ split and it was only later that Carol realized the danger she had been in.

“So, they have been our guard dogs ever since. We saved Holly from a life of guarding livestock (the norm for the breed) and made her a house puppy.”

The photo shows Greg holding Holly, back when he could more easily lift her.

“We love her and she takes her duties very seriously.”

Making memories for a little kid this summer: “Our only grandchild (Emma) lives in Amman, Jordan,” wrote Cathy Johnson, seen in the photo with husband Tom. “We live in Wilbur. This is at the London Bridge. I think she’ll remember our three weeks traveling together.”

Today’s Slice question: If the cost was not an issue, how would you remodel your kitchen?
