The Slice: Relationships built to last

The Slice asked about long-term relationships.

Specifically, the question dealt with cars and trucks bought new and never resold.

Here are just a few of the answers.

Clarence Trout has a crew cab one-ton 1973 Chevy pickup. “I’m proud of it.”

Dennis Foster has a red 1978 Ford pickup he purchased new for $5,000.

Paul and Kay Bivens still have a 1971 Chevelle, “Bought off the showroom floor.”

Sally English has a 1967 Ford Mustang, bought just as she was about to start a new job at Sacred Heart. “I was mentioned once in your column quite a while ago when you asked for any Sallys that owned Mustangs.”

Nel Carver’s husband, Bob, is still driving a 1977 Ford 150. “Says he will keep it ’til he can’t climb into it anymore.”

Art Keinath wrote, “I am the one and only owner of a 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup. It turned 30 April 6th.”

Jim Haunschild bought a new Pontiac J2000 in October of 1981. “I gave it up five years ago, but that was after I had driven it for 29 1/2 years.”

Jenny Rose purchased a new 1978 Toyota Corolla in December of 1977 for $4,300. “I was not married, no kids. I drove that car for 21 years. My oldest son even got to drive it. One day, it just finally died. I still miss it.”

Suzanne Sturdy, not one to give up on a rig, still has a 1970 Jeep CJ5 and 1976 Ford F150 4x4.

Shirley Pantaleo’s family had a 1977 Ford Econoline van that they donated to the Union Gospel Mission in 2014.

Larry Rudy bought a 1971 GMC Vandura van when it was new and has been driving it ever since. “I use it mostly now for haulin’ stuff.”

Jim Emory shared this. “I have a 1978 Dodge Tradesman van that I ordered in Germany while serving in the military. We flew into Detroit and picked it up on our way to my next duty assignment. It has served us well over the years from daily commutes to many backpacking and camping trips and hauled more cords of wood than I care to remember.”

Ken Heath still has the Chevy pickup he bought new in 1966.

And Linda Delaney said the Porsche 924 she and her husband bought in 1977 is still the best-running car they have ever owned.
