The governor’s proposed budget for the 2009-11 biennium proposes dangerous cuts to nursing home funding. We are all acutely aware of the challenges facing Washington state and the country in this recession economy. Nonetheless, we are very disappointed and alarmed by significant cuts that will severely impact nursing homes caring for the residents who rely on Medicaid. Cuts of this magnitude could result in the closure of some facilities, and the displacement of some of the most vulnerable.

A stable, quality system of long-term care is good for residents, employees and all of us who someday may need nursing care. Cuts in funding now will have long-term consequences on our ability to meet the needs of the frail and elderly population. Our state is experiencing a difficult time; however, the Legislature and public cannot turn their backs on a growing population of the most vulnerable and needy in our communities. Please avoid cuts to nursing home and boarding home funding for Medicaid residents.

Please ask your lawmakers to keep their commitment to quality care and do what is necessary to assure access for Medicaid residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
