Rescue the Constitution

In 2010 the U.S. Supreme Court determined that corporations have no limits on their spending in elections because they are considered “persons.” Justice John Paul Stevens wrote in dissent: “Corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. … They are not themselves members of ‘We the People’ by whom and for whom our Constitution was established.”

The state of Vermont is currently considering being the first state of the union for passage of a 28th Amendment, denying that corporations are persons. Seventy-six percent of Americans, of various political persuasions, have expressed disagreement with the Supreme Court’s decision. Since an amendment seems to be the only means of returning the power of the country back to the people, I would highly encourage: 1) our state representatives and law schools to take the lead with Vermont in promoting this necessary rescue of the Constitution; and 2) The Spokesman-Review to lead in the debate to elucidate the whys and wherefores for such an amendment.
