A March 30 Froma Harrop column mentioned the use of nurse practitioners as part of the solution for filling the gap of needing more basic health providers. I can attest to the fact that they are a dedicated, competent, caring group of providers who are widely used in our medical community. I believe nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants and medical aides could go a long way in filling the shortage of health care providers. They should be backed by physicians for problems beyond their abilities.

This seems to me to be a perfect opportunity to train our returning veterans to fill this shortage. Many may have had field medical training. If that is the case and they wish to continue in the medical field, give them a fast-track education, paying for tuition and helping their families if needed.

The politicians need to provide the money for education and family support to any of the other returning veterans that are interested in becoming a medical provider.
