Park needs changes

My first visit to Spokane, in 1977, included a walk through Riverfront Park. Forty years since that first visit, the park is now a different place. Many parts of the park are very dark at night, and signage is often old, faded or unhelpful.

During the past two years, many citizens offered suggestions for improving Riverfront Park. A constant theme emerged in these suggestions: We need to make the park safer and more convenient for families to enjoy at all hours.

The new master plan for Riverfront Park does just that. The plan calls for nearly $3 million in safety enhancements alone, including added lighting, security cameras and emergency phones. The plan also includes a new vehicle access off Washington Street, so that families can more conveniently access a new destination playground on the river. Combined with other features of the master plan, including a spectacular Pavilion and well-lit promenade, Riverfront Park will become a place anyone can enjoy day and night.

None of this can happen without new financing. I urge you to vote yes on Proposition No. 2 and help us make Riverfront Park the place to visit for the next 40 years.
