As I read distressed letters and notifications from people who have had their bikes stolen, this question comes to mind: Why don’t we have a free bicycle program in Spokane and the Tri-Cities?

Riding a bicycle shouldn’t be limited only to those who can afford to buy a bicycle when it is such an enjoyable activity, and is becoming an environmental necessity as our air quality declines and our economy prevents some from owning a car or a bicycle.

I believe it is the responsibility of our city councils to implement such a program so that bicycles are readily available in the downtown and outlying areas. Our cities can afford a bicycle share program where bicycles are ridden and returned for the next person to use. This would eliminate theft and create a healthier environment. I am eager to see these programs begin.
