Spokane Memorial Stadium, 1950. “Honoring those of this state who died for their Country” — stated on two monument markers at the stadium.

The citizens and 26 clubs and organizations started fundraising in 1948. Two years later, they raised $600,000 to build the stadium. “They were overjoyed to present it as a gift to the city, free and clear, a memorial to the city’s sons who gave their lives in their country’s wars. It was to be a lasting and useful monument to their civic pride, for its happy people.” — The Spokesman-Review (Sept. 10, 1950).

The stadium was renamed Joe Albi Stadium in 1962 to honor Mr. Joe Albi, who was battling ALS. “Joe Albi did more for the Spokane and Inland Empire sports world than any other man, ever.” — The Spokesman-Review (May 9, 1962).

Husky Stadium, built in 1920, Martin Stadium, The Kibbie Dome, Roos Field (EWU), Pine Bowl, Notre Dame, Memorial Stadium at Nebraska, Rose Bowl and many more have been renovated. Why not Joe Albi?

Please preserve this landmark. Honor veterans, Mr. Joe Albi and the citizens of Spokane. Honor what the people wanted in 1950. “A Lasting and Useful Monument.” The stadium is the monument.

The stadium was a gift to the city, not the Spokane School District 81. A veterans monument should never be demolished!
