America3’s Mighty Mary pulled ahead early and continually turned back challenges by Young America for an impressive victory in the opening race of the America’s Cup defender finals.

Skippered by Leslie Egnot, Mighty Mary won the 18.55-mile race by 48 seconds.

East Carolina will announce today that current assistant Joe Dooley will succeed Eddie Payne as basketball head coach.

Payne, who accepted the head coaching job at Oregon State on Friday, had hoped to bring Dooley along as an assistant.

Mark McCumber had a double-eagle 2 in his 19-hole victory over Tom Lehman in the first round of the new Anderson Consulting World Championship of Golf.
