Rookie Andre Ribeiro of Brazil won his first Indy-car race at the New England 200 in Loudon, N.H., while Jacques Villeneuve edged closer to the overall championship.

Ribeiro, the pole-sitter whose best previous finish was fourth, passed Michael Andretti for the lead on the 100th lap, and relinquished it only when he pitted on 122.

Villeneuve came away with 168 points and second-place Al Unser Jr., 111, with only two races and 44 points still possible.

Bobby Labonte made heady fuel strategy pay off to claim the GM Goodwrench Dealer 400 victory and a sweep of this season’s two NASCAR Winston Cup events at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.

Labonte, who also won the Miller Genuine Draft 400 at the 2-mile track in June, ran the final 55 laps, or 110 miles, on a tank of fuel while his top rivals had to pit for enough gasoline to finish.

Mike Dunn won his third Top Fuel title of the year, beating Tommy Johnson Jr. in the Champion Auto Stores Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., with a run of 4.952 seconds at 291.63 mph in the LaVictoria Salsa Special.

John Force claimed his sixth Funny Car victory of the season and 48th overall, using a 5.284 at 291.92 in the Castrol GTX Pontiac to easily defeat Gary Densham (5.850, 231.06). Warren Johnson won his 51st Pro Stock title with a run of 7.202 at 193.05 against Jim Yates.
