Moments after center fielder Otis Nixon robbed Minnesota’s Rich Becker of a game-winning home run, Pedro Munoz hit an RBI single in the 10th inning Monday night that gave the Twins a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers in Minneapolis.

Kirby Puckett followed Becker with a ground-rule double and scored on Munoz’s third hit of the game. The Rangers remained one-half game ahead of Milwaukee for the wild-card lead.

White Sox 6, Brewers 5

Chicago

Frank Thomas hit a two-run single during a five-run first inning as Chicago ended Milwaukee’s five-game winning streak.

Brewers starter Jamie McAndrew (2-3) got the loss despite throwing just four pitches. He gave up a leadoff double to Lance Johnson, then left with a strained right knee.

Indians 9, Blue Jays 1

Cleveland

Eddie Murray homered and singled during a seven-run second inning, powering Cleveland past Toronto for its fifth straight win.

Murray led off the big inning with his 16th home run, then capped it with a two-run single that finished Giovanni Carrara (1-4).

Royals 4, Yankees 3

New York

Reliever Jeff Montgomery got Ruben Sierra to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, preserving Kansas City’s victory over New York.

The Royals, who played at home Sunday and play at home again today, made a one-day trip to New York to make up a game wiped out by the delayed start of the season.

They sent the Yankees to their ninth loss in 10 games.

Milwaukee’s B.J. Surhoff was named the American League player of the week after hitting .464 with three homers and 10 RBIs… . Murray’s home run was the 474th of his career, leaving him one away from tying Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 16th place on the all-time list. His 5,049 total bases lifted him past George Brett into 12th place.
