New-Look Seahawks Mix It Up Fans Better Buy Game Program Before Watching Opener Sunday

Tacoma News Tribune

If nothing else, sales of programs should be brisk at the Seahawks’ opener Sunday in the Kingdome.

Coach Dennis Erickson’s first starting lineup features six new offensive and four new defensive starters.

Defensive ends Brent Williams and Antonio Edwards switched positions, while Todd Peterson has replaced John Kasay as the placekicker.

“We’re still new playing together,” said Tyronne Stowe, who beat out Dean Wells at middle linebacker. “It’s a different group of guys than it’s been in the past. It takes time to jell, but I don’t have any worries.”

Erickson announced his slate of new starters this week - wide receiver Joey Galloway, tight end Carlester Crumpler, left tackle James Atkins, left guard Matt Joyce, center Jim Sweeney, fullback Steve Smith, Stowe, outside linebacker Winston Moss, cornerback Corey Harris and defensive tackle Sam Adams.

For a team with 10 new starters, the Seahawks are crying for veteran leadership. Safety Eugene Robinson realizes that.

“I’m going to be more focused,” Robinson said. “I’ll make sure the extra-circular stuff does not happen, so we can get to the playoffs.”

Meshing this many new starters won’t be easy. Emphasis must be placed on the offensive line. Right tackle Howard Ballard and right guard Kevin Mawae are the only returning starters from last season. Sweeney replaces Ray Donaldson at center. Left tackle Ray Roberts is injured and left guard Jeff Blackshear is benched.

Injury report

Improved medical conditions could allow linebacker Dean Wells (hamstring) and halfback Lamar Smith (ankle and knee) to practice this week.
