Two veteran Inland Empire football officials are going bowling. Bill Gaskins and Jim Northcott will be in Tucson, Ariz., Dec. 27 to work the Copper Bowl game between Air Force and Texas Tech.

Gaskins, a former Lewis and Clark High School and Washington State football star, now chief pharmacist at Memorial Hospital in Pullman, will be the field judge. This is his third bowl assignment.

Northcott, a former Gonzaga Prep and Eastern Washington football standout, who operates an insurance agency in Spokane, will be the back judge. This is Northcott’s fifth postseason assignment.

Both are Pacific-10 Conference officials.

Baseball

Eastern Washington University’s Thorpe Fieldhouse will be the setting for the school’s annual Holiday Baseball Camp, Dec. 27-30, for anyone from 7th grade through junior college.

Cost is $225 residential, $150 commuter. There’s a $10 discount if five or more send in their registration together. The camp day runs from 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

Renowned major league hitting instructor Charlie Lau and Alex Rodriguez, the Seattle Mariners’ young shortstop, will headline the inaugural Spokane Professional Winter Camp Jan. 6-7 at the Fore Seasons Sports Dome near the Broadway exit off Interstate 90.

Former Mead High pitcher Geoff Kellogg, now in the San Diego Padres organization and a principle in G.A.K. Promotions that is putting on the clinic; Tim Killeen, a catcher in the Padres organization; and Adam Hyzdu, in the Giants organization, will be other clinicians.

Cost is $150 for two 4-hour sessions (2-6 p.m.) and is designed for boys and girls 11-19 years old. The session is limited to the first 100. Registration forms are available at Kimmel Athletic, Jack’s Sports Cards in Franklin Park Mall and the Fore Seasons Sports Dome.

Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston will conduct a hitting camp for youngsters ages 12-17 the four Wednesdays between Jan. 17 and Feb. 7 from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $50.

Bowling

Rick Jones and Martha Sneva, both of Spokane, parlayed singles championships into all-events wins in the inaugural Sports Page Invitational that attracted 114 men and 62 women.

Jones won men’s A singles in the handicap event with a 745 that featured a 300 game and all-events with a 2,210. He won $425 in singles and $60 in all-events.

Sneva won women’s A singles with a 787 to collect $230 and all-events with a 2,054 for $55.

Other men’s winners: B singles - Steve Ross, 674. A doubles - Cal Sullivan-Bob Samply, 1,423. B doubles - Gary Stanley-Joe Miller, 1,341. A team - Wapato, Wash. (Jackie Valdez, Sam Nishi, Sullivan, Clyde Valdez, Tony Alvarez), 3,418. B all-events - Stanley, 1,852.

College scene

Three Whitworth College soccer players - two women and a man - were accorded honorable mention status when the NAIA announced its All-America teams.

Jennifer Tissue, a junior forward from Spokane (Shadle Park) and Joy Cullen, a freshman midfielder from Spokane (Mead), were honored on the women’s team. Men’s selection was Matt Kinder, a senior defender from Spokane (Mead).

All three had previously been named first-team All-Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges and All-Northwest Region.

Washington State junior Tari Beck was selected to the 1995 All-West Region All-America second team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Beck, from Sammamish High in Bellevue, Wash., was a marking back on defense for the 4-13-1 Cougars and had two goals and two assists. She joins former Mead product Kim Lynass (1993) and Robyn Smith (1994) as Cougars to make the West Region All-America team.

Twelve other Pacific-10 Conference players were picked to the three all-region teams. Two University of Washington seniors, Sanya Trandrum and Tara Bilanski, joined Beck on the second team.

Andrew Schillinger, a Whitman College junior from Spokane (West Valley), is averaging 8.2 assists and 6.6 points for the Missionaries’ men’s basketball team.

Eamon Twohig of Spokane (Lewis and Clark), a freshman at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is the only newcomer selected to the Brewers’ men’s volleyball team. The other 10 are returnees from last season’s 19-9 team. Vassar is an NCAA Division III school.

Gymnastics

Ioana Ojag, a former member of the Rumanian National Team now attending San Jose State, will be in Spokane to speak about her experiences and put on an exhibition Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3603 S. Schafer Road. The public is invited. There is no admission charge.

She will be joined in the exhibition by several members from Spokane Elite Gymnastics. SEG’s manager/director is Bob Ito, Ojag’s coach and foster father.
