Syria, Israel Ponder Relationship

Senior Israeli negotiators said Friday Syria had reaffirmed its interest in concluding a peace treaty but left unclear during three days of talks the kind of relationship it had in mind.

“We have yet to obtain a satisfactory answer to the question - what kind of peace, what level or depth of peace?” Israeli Ambassador Itamar Rabinovich said as negotiations were shifted from Maryland’s Eastern Shore to Washington on a more informal basis for the long holiday weekend.

He said Israel was not interested in the kind of “cold peace” it has with Egypt, which the diplomat contrasted with the warm relationship Israel has developed with Jordan.
