Cash Stolen From Assessor’s Office

From Staff And Wire Reports

More than $270 was stolen from a Spokane County assessor’s office cash register last weekend.

The office on the Spokane County Courthouse main floor was closed Saturday through Monday for the Presidents Day holiday.

An employee noticed Tuesday that the cash register in the Property Control Division had been broken into, said Charlene Cooney, the county assessor. Missing was $274.90.

The cash register had been forced open, Cooney said. But the office, which is usually locked after closing, showed no sign of forced entry.

Cooney said she doesn’t know of any suspects in the theft.

The money in the cash register was to be deposited after the holiday weekend, Cooney said.

“I think we will change our habits,” she said.
