Cougs Stun Usc On Buzzer-Beater

Washington State University’s Susie Jarosch ended up finishing where she started.

Her jump shot with 2.1 seconds left gave the Cougars a 62-61 win over the 20th-ranked Southern California Trojans on Saturday night in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Pullman’s Friel Court.

The Cougars (2-2, 9-4) trailed 61-60 after the Trojans’ Tina Thompson hit a baseline jumper with 6.9 seconds left.

The Trojans (1-3, 8-4) were so happy that they almost forgot to get back on defense. After getting the ball on the inbounds play, Jarosch drove the length of the court and swished a soft 8-footer for the win.

“I wasn’t necessarily looking for it (the shot),” Jarosch said. “They were doubling up on Jenni (Ruff), and I had a good look at the basket.”

Jarosch didn’t score a point in the second half until the final basket. She finished the game with 11 points.

It was Jarosch, a fifth-year senior, who kept WSU in the game early. She hit three 3-pointers by halftime, when WSU trailed 27-22.

A combined 31 first-half turnovers - 17 for USC and 14 for WSU mixed in with 19 personal fouls made for some ugly basketball.

“I felt we lost our focus in the first half,” said Cougars coach Harold Rhodes. “We spent too much time worried about things we couldn’t control, like calls by the officials.

“But the officials aren’t the ones throwing the ball away and dribbling into traffic.”

“I’m really trying to hold my tongue about the officiating in the Pac-10,” said USC coach Cheryl Miller. “But at the same time, they’ve really got to get some consistency.

“You can’t call a game ticky-tack one minute and then have players beating each other to death the next,” Miller said.

So that’s where her little brother Reggie of the Indiana Pacers gets it.

“But it sure wasn’t the fault of the officials that we started celebrating after Tina’s shot, with no one getting back on defense,” Miller said.

The Cougars started the second half on a 10-0 run and took their first lead on a Julie Wight basket with 17:50 remaining in the game.

WSU built a 40-33 lead before the Trojans went on a 10-2 run.

Trailing 57-52, WSU closed the game with a 10-4 spurt to seal the win.

The Cougars had solid play from freshman Yvonee Kunze from Berlin, who finished with nine points and four rebounds and helped in the defensive attack against USC’s Tina Thompson. Thompson scored 15.

Picking up the slack for USC was Karleen Shields. The 26-year-old mother of two finished with 24 points. Kristin Erickson scored 12 to lead WSU’s balanced attack.

The Cougars beat the Trojans for the first time since 1991.
