Two children remained hospitalized Tuesday following a one-car accident in which their grandmother and a cousin died in the northeast corner of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

The crash occurred Monday when a station wagon missed a corner on U.S. Forest Service 99 and went over a 150-foot cliff about four miles north of the Windy Ridge viewpoint.

Killed were Virginia O. Bias, 68, of Oakville, Wash., and 17-yearold Brian Seal, hometown unknown.

The driver, Brian Lee Jerkatis, 29, of Vacaville, Calif., was treated at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver for cuts and bruises. His girlfriend, Gloria Kidder, 37, was treated for head cuts at a hospital in Morton, Wash.

Bias was Kidder’s mother and Seal was her nephew.

Kidder’s two daughters were flown by helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland, Ore. Emily Kidder, 8, was listed in fair condition and Jennifer Kidder, 7, in serious condition Tuesday.
