Agassi, Sampras Win

Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, the world’s top two players, moved closer to a showdown at the $2.5 million Canadian Open by easily advancing to the quarterfinals.

Agassi breezed by Czech qualifier Daniel Vacek 6-3, 6-2, and Sampras downed Mauricio Hadad of Colombia 6-2, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Jarry Stadium.

Agassi meets MaliVai Washington and Sampras, in his first tournament since winning a third straight Wimbledon title, faces No. 7 Michael Stich of Germany in the quarterfinals. Stich downed No. 10 Jim Courier 6-3, 6-2.

The third and fourth seeds also advanced. No. 3 Michael Chang next faces No. 12 Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and No. 4 Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia plays Mats Wilander of Sweden.
