Lightning struck a crowd of soccer fans seeking shelter from a downpour, killing at least 17 people and injuring 35 others, authorities said Sunday.

The fans were huddled under a shelter beside a soccer field in Puerto Lempira when the bolt struck Saturday.

Eleven people, including two children, were killed immediately, Red Cross officials said. Another six died later at a local clinic.
