Floyd’s 3 Makes Sitting Bearable Sprague-Harrington Star Co-Mvp At A/B All-Star Game

Dave Trimmer Staff Writer

For Ryan Floyd, the hardest - and easiest - part of adjusting to his new teammates was sitting on the bench.

The co-most valuable player in the WIBCA City-State A/B All-Star game scored 17 points and had numerous slick passes, some that were even converted into baskets, to lead the City Team (white uniforms) to a 109-95 victory over the State Team Wednesday night at Gonzaga University’s Martin Centre.

“None of us are used to sitting on the bench,” said Floyd, who led Sprague-Harrington to a sixth-place finish in the State B tournament and will walk-on at GU. “It was a lot of fun, but I got a little tired.”

A deep 3-pointer by Floyd sealed the game. State cut a 17-point deficit to seven in a 5-minute span but couldn’t get a rebound when City missed four shots.

On the fourth offensive rebound and fifth shot, Gary Hughes of Curlew was fouled. He missed the free throw, but City came up with the rebound and Floyd buried the 3 and broke State, making it 103-93 with 1:50 to go.

“I think we ran a little harder than them,” Floyd said. “We were smaller and quicker.

“(The hard part was) playing as a team. We all want to show what we’ve got but we did pretty good. We made the extra pass. It’s just hard to get timing down.”

Beau Hilty-Jones of GarfieldPalouse and the City team, shared MVP honors with Floyd after scoring 19 points. His 3-pointer from the top of the key started an 18-3 run over the last 3:31 of the first half that put his team up 54-47 at halftime.

State got within three early in the second half, but Hilty-Jones drilled a 3 from the right wing and a shot from left of the lane to stem the charge. Then he capped a 14-3 run with a three-point play off a feed from Floyd that put City up 88-71 with 10:18 to play.

“It was awesome,” said HiltyJones, who is going to Walla Walla Community College. “We were quicker; that was the whole thing. We got out on the break more.

“There wasn’t really a key, just the quality of people here. When you have great players around you, no matter how bad you mess up, they can make you look good.”

Will Hutchens, the Class B player of the year from state champ Dayton, led State with 19 points.

“I didn’t feel real good about it,” said Hutchens, who will walk on at Washington State. “Lots of missed opportunities and we got hammered on the boards. But it was fun.”

Joe Deutsch of Medical Lake had 15 points with plenty of rebounds, though there were no statistics available, in a losing effort.

“I think they were more in sync,” he said. “They were running more, especially in the last 5 minutes of the first half.”

The teams play again tonight at Seattle Pacific University.
