There’s some good news for families getting ready to load their kids into rental cars and head to summer vacation spots: Auto rental companies say they’re again offering unlimited mileage.

Hertz Corp. said Wednesday it is dropping its two-month-old policy of charging motorists for driving more than 100 miles per day.

Other big rental companies followed suit.

Avis said the move by Hertz, based in Park Ridge, will force it to abandon plans to impose mileage caps this summer.

Budget Rent A Car will respond by offering customers a choice of two rates: one with a mileage cap, and another with unlimited miles at $4 to $5 a day more. Customers can change rates when they return the car, to ensure they get the best rate.
