Cameron’s Home Run Lifts Cougars, 9-3

Washington State used a Ken Cameron two-run home run to beat the host Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans 9-3 Wednesday night in the first game of a doubleheader.

Cameron’s blast came off Vulcan pitcher Russell Ricafort in a fourrun third inning. Cameron finished 2-4 with three RBIs.

Robert Ramsey got the win for the Cougars (6-12) by scattering nine hits and striking out six. Ricafort took the loss after giving up seven runs on five hits.

The second game was rained out and will be played today as part of a doubleheader with the Vulcans.

Point Loma 1, Whitworth 0

Left-hander Dan Auchard struck out 18 batters as the host Point Loma Nazarene College Crusaders beat the Whitworth Pirates 1-0 at the Bombs at the Beach Invitational Baseball Tournament in San Diego.

The Crusaders (18-11) scored the only run of the game in the extra frame on a Whitworth (6-4-1) error that scored Mike Wazal from second base.

Pirates pitcher Billy Wark gave up three hits while striking out four batters and walking three.

Whitworth plays this morning at 9 against Baker University of Baldwin, Kan., a 9-3 loser to Linfield.
