Highway District Mergers Said Unlikely

Kootenai Perspectives will meet Wednesday with highway district commissioners to discuss planning, project coordination and funding.

The meeting will be at 7 a.m. at the Idaho Transportation Department, 600 W. Prairie.

Larry Comer of Kootenai Perspectives says his group wants to assist Kootenai County’s four highway districts with problemsolving.

Talk of consolidating the taxing districts “jumps a lot of steps ahead,” he said.

In the early 1970s, there were eight highway districts plus a county road department, said Eastside Highway District Commissioner Dick Edinger. At that time, residents in outlying areas didn’t get enough attention, he said.
