Americans Scott Davis and Todd Eldredge placed second and third in the short program of men’s singles figure skating at the Nations Cup at Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Viacheslav Zagorodniuk of Russia finished first in the field of 12.

Mariah’s Storm battled for the lead at the top of the stretch and then drew clear in the final eighth to post a 1-1/2-length victory in the $220,600 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Mariah’s Storm, with Robert Lester up, covered 1-1/8 miles on a track rated as good in 1:51 1-5 and paid $8.60, $4.80 and $4.40. The time was just two-fifths second off the stakes record established by Pretty Perfect in 1984.

Tom Gough, a U.S. Marine, broke American records in the snatch and total lift in the 200-1/2-pound division at the World Weightlifting championships at Canton, China.

Gough lifted 352-1/2 pounds on his second snatch attempt to break teammate Paul Fleschler’s national mark of 347 pounds. In the clean-and-jerk, Gough lifted 435 pounds for a record total of 788 pounds.
