Most of the 200 people who gathered Sunday for Stephanie Kuhen’s memorial service did not know the child who died in a spray of gunfire on a gang-infested street.

They were mourning an innocent 3-year-old child whose family happened to take a wrong turn on their way home from a barbecue. The Rev. Steve Gooden tried to answer the congregation’s question, “Why Stephanie?”

“It only takes one person, a willing heart and someone who is willing to put their life on the line,” Gooden said. “Stephanie Kuhen didn’t ask for that opportunity … but it was given to her. Stephanie Kuhen touched our lives.”

Stephanie’s family sat in front at Angelus Temple, just five miles from where the girl was shot in the head and her 2-year-old brother was shot in the foot. The driver of the car suffered a minor back wound.

Three people have been arrested for investigation in the crime.
