In a bid to rid Bombay of its squalid shanties, 4 million poor residents will get free apartments, authorities said Tuesday.

“We want Bombay to be clean and beautiful,” said Manohar Joshi, chief minister of Maharashtra state, of which Bombay is the capital.

Nearly half of the city’s 12.5 million people live in slums, where families of up to 10 people share one room.

The government plans to allow private builders to construct apartment blocks on large tracts of land occupied by 2,335 shanties.

Builders will have to plow back profits made from selling plush apartments and offices into building free units for slum dwellers.
