Seles Takes Step To Final
Monica Seles and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario scored straight-set victories and advanced to the semifinals of the $1.3 million du Maurier Open women’s tennis tournament at Montreal.
The top-seeded Seles downed No. 6 Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-2 to earn a semifinal spot opposite Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia, ranked 31st in the world.
Sanchez Vicario, the second seed, beat Florencia Labat of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 and will meet unseeded Kimberly Po, ranked 90th.
Basuki beat No. 13-seed Amy Frazier 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 while Po beat fifth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez 6-2, 6-3.
Thomas Enqvist shocked top-seeded Pete Sampras in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the ATP Championship at Mason, Ohio.
In other quarterfinals, Andre Agassi eliminated Yevgeny Kafelnikov 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3. Also, second-seeded Thomas Muster captured his third consecutive straight-set victory, beating ninth-seeded Wayne Ferreira 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (16-14). And third-seeded Michael Chang, a two-time ATP champion, defeated fifth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic 6-3, 7-5.
In the semis, Enqvist will play Chang and Muster will face Agassi.
