Free Agents Face Wire
Sixty-four baseball free agents, including Roger Clemens, John Wetteland, Alex Fernandez and Moises Alou, face a deadline today to re-sign with their former teams unless they are offered salary arbitration.
So far just six players had been offered arbitration: Jimmy Key by the Yankees, David Wells by the Orioles, Mark McLemore by the Rangers, and Greg Vaughn, Fernando Valenzuela and Craig Shipley by the Padres.
Players not offered arbitration can’t re-sign with their former teams until May 1. Facing the deadline, pitcher Greg Hibbard agreed to a minor-league contract with Seattle and catcher Tom Pagnozzi got a $4 million, two-year deal to re-sign with the St. Louis Cardinals.
