Ferry Goes Down With 137 On Board

Compiled From Wire Services

A ferry sank in heavy seas off Sumatra and more than 120 were missing, authorities said today.

The craft was carrying 137 passengers and crew when it went down about 8:30 p.m. Friday, while making the 15-mile voyage from Malahayati, on the northern tip of Sumatra, to the island of Weh.

Authorities believe the ferry was overcrowded when it sank in high waves, said Rusmana. The craft was carrying mostly traders from northern Sumatra.
