The Calgary Flames of the NHL, in the market for an assistant coach today in the wake of Don Hay’s departure to Phoenix, haven’t talked to the coach of the Spokane Chiefs about the vacancy.

Coach Mike Babcock, who has a year left on a three-year deal with the Chiefs, said Monday he expects to sign a contract extension that will keep him in Spokane.

Babcock, the Western Hockey League West Division coach of the year, will be offered a raise to sign for two more years, general manager Tim Speltz said.

As for moving to Calgary, Babcock said, “It’s always interesting where rumors come from. All I know for sure is I have more than enough on my plate right now.

“No one (from Calgary) has talked to me in that regard. Before I get to the next level, I feel I have to win a Memorial Cup here. I have to build a foundation in Spokane before I leave here, if I do leave one day.

“I’m certainly in no hurry.”

Speltz said the club hopes to have Babcock’s contract extension sealed by midmonth. An announcement on a new assistant coach is expected this week.

Recently named coach of the Canadian World Junior team, Babcock will be in Calgary Aug. 2 for a weeklong camp with the world junior organization.
