East Sweeps West In Volleyball

The East swept the West for the second time in a week, winning the A/B and AAA/AA matches Saturday night in the Dairy Farmers of Washington All-State Volleyball Series at Fife High School.

The teams played last week in Spokane.

Deer Park’s Lea Wiiest had a match-high 21 kills in the A/B contest, won by the East 15-5, 7-15, 5-15, 15-4, 16-14.

The East trailed 13-9 in the fifth game, which included 12 sideouts at 13-11. Wilbur-Creston’s Holly Arden added 15 kills for the East. Wiiest had 22 digs.

Brandy Barrett of Gonzaga Prep, Molly Jones of Ferris and May Wilson of North Central dominated the AAA/AA match, which the East won 15-13, 15-12, 10-15, 15-10. Barrett had 15 kills and six blocks, Jones 29 assists and Wilson 26 digs.

Basketball

The 15-U Spokane Stars defeated 16th-seed Philadelphia 65-62 Saturday at the 15-U/14-U National AAU girls basketball championships in Nashville, Tenn.

Carey Saver (Newport) scored 13 points and Heather Cox (Tekoa-Oakesdale) had 12, plus 10 rebounds. The Stars play Minnesota today and Indiana and Vermont Monday.

The 14-U Stars lost to North Carolina 68-50.
