Protecting West Coast Steelhead

The National Marine Fisheries Service Tuesday proposed 15 population segments of the West Coast steelhead in Oregon, Washington, California and Idaho be declared threatened, endangered, candidate species or not listed under the Endangered Species Act:

Coastal steelhead

1. Puget Sound, listing not presently warranted

2. Olympic Peninsula, listing not presently warranted

3. Southwest Washington, listing not presently warranted

4. Lower Columbia River, threatened

5. Upper Willamette River, listing not presently warranted

6. Oregon Coast, threatened

7. Klamath Mountains, threatened

8. Northern California, threatened

9. Central California Coast, endangered

10. South-Central California Coast, endangered

11. Southern California, endangered

12. Central Valley, endangered

Inland steelhead

13. Middle Columbia River, candidate for listing

14. Upper Columbia River, endangered

15. Snake River basin, threatened
