Sewer Construction Rerouting Traffic Off Country Homes

Southbound traffic on Country Homes Boulevard is being rerouted for a month, which suits Perry Davis just fine.

The 75-year-old Country Homes resident is so frustrated with speeders on the commuter thoroughfare that he yells at drivers as they zip past.

The antic angered a driver Monday, who threatened to hit Davis.

So when the county government closed a 3/4-mile section of road Monday to lay sewer pipe, Davis was a happy man. Traffic southbound on Country Homes from Cedar to Wall will be rerouted to nearby side streets.

“That’ll cut down half the traffic, at least,” said Davis.

The road likely will be reopened in late June. The project is the final phase of the neighborhood sewer improvement project.

Summer construction season is blooming, bringing hot tar and million-dollar roadwork projects.

Two other major North Side roadways will be altered for construction:

Traffic on Hastings/Farwell Road between Highway 2 and Highway 395 will be delayed until the fall. The state transportation department is spending $2.25 million to widen the road.

When the project is completed in September or October, the road will be transformed from a two-lane country road into a five-lane byway with a turn lane, sidewalks and bike lanes.

County road engineer Jim Radke estimates rush-hour delays will be at least 15 minutes through the summer. Construction began late last month.

Radke said rapid home construction in the North Spokane and Mead make the improvement necessary. The road is a link between North Spokane and the Wandermere Shopping Center on Highway 2.

Day-Mount Spokane Road in Green Bluff will be closed between Lowe and Bruce roads for a month while it is resurfaced and widened.

The $1.05 million project, funded with county, state and federal money, likely will be completed by early July, according to Radke. A center turn lane will be added.

The project, begun last summer, is two-thirds finished, he said. Road crews will be completing the work this summer.

While the road is closed, cars will be detoured to Mount Spokane Park Drive.
