Election Celebrators Burn Reckless Driver

Associated Press

A crowd celebrating local election results after peaceful voting in violence-torn KwaZulu-Natal province burned a man to death when he drove his car into their street party.

Police and witnesses said the crowd grabbed the man, locked him in the trunk and set the vehicle ablaze in the Umlazi black settlement near Durban on Friday night.

The man had driven his car into a crowd of about 50 youths celebrating the strong showing of President Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress in elections Wednesday for town and rural officials. No one in the crowd was seriously injured, according to news reports.

Final election results were not expected until Monday.
