Mrs. Fields ‘Low-Fat’ Cookies Fail Test

Associated Press

Mrs. Fields Cookies, the nation’s largest seller of fresh-baked cookies, has agreed to stop promoting certain cookies as low-fat.

The Federal Trade Commission said Mrs. Fields had agreed to pull the deceptive packages from grocery stores and change its advertising for Chocolite and Semi-Sweet Classic cookies.

Mrs. Fields had promoted the cookies as part of “our new line of LOW FAT cookies.”

To be considered low-fat, cookies must contain no more than 3 grams of fat per serving, according to Food and Drug Administration rules. The Chocolite and Semi-Sweet Classic cookies have 5.5 grams of fat.

Mrs. Fields Cookies, based in Salt Lake City, has more than 600 bakeries nationwide.

In a statement, the company said it realized the cookies were not low-fat before the FTC complained, but some stores did not heed instructions to remove the inaccurate material.
