A former professional basketball player has been charged with accosting a White House aide at gunpoint and forcing him to withdraw cash from bank automatic teller machines.

Charles Vincent “Hawkeye” Whitney, 38, a former North Carolina State star who played two seasons in the National Basketball Association Kansas City Kings, was arrested Thursday night at District of Columbia Police headquarters and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping.

On the night of Jan. 26, Whitney and another man allegedly accosted Mark Fabiani, the White House spokesman in the Whitewater affair, as he left a subway stop in suburban Alexandria, Va.

Police said Fabiani was hustled into a car and driven into Washington, where he was forced to withdraw $1,600 from ATMs at two banks.
