Lisa Benscheidt began attacking the net this year and the newly tapped aggressiveness led to a regional title.

Benscheidt has been spectacular in A-1 league play this season, compiling a 12-2 record. Her season was culminated with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Janice Northrop of Lewiston in the A Region I Tournament last weekend.

“I worked hard on my game all summer and didn’t play another sport in the fall, and it paid off,” Benscheidt said.

Benscheidt used a strong serve and a willingness to come to the net to dominate play in North Idaho this season.

“I like to go to the net, and you don’t see a lot of girls do that around here so it keeps my opponent off-guard,” Benscheidt said.

She has played steadily all season, including a win at a tournament in Missoula two weeks ago and a second in the Lewiston Invitational against stiff competition from southern Idaho.

“Lisa has been the dominant player in the area this season,” said CdA coach Eileen Johnson. “She works her tail off and really moves you around the court.”

Benscheidt’s off-court abilities rival those on the court, too. With a 3.78 grade-point average, she will attend Whitworth next year on an academic scholarship and play tennis. Her teammates have also recognized her leadership by voting her team captain two years in a row.

“I’ve been lucky to have her on the team; she’s a wonderful player and great person,” Johnson said.

Benscheidt will have her hands full in Boise this weekend against players from the Boise area who play year-round. According to Johnson, Boise players are some of the best in the Northwest.

“I hope to get some good matches and get to play good players,” Benscheidt said. “I haven’t set any goals for state, but I’m really pleased with my season so far.”

Goals? It wouldn’t be a surprise if Benscheidt brings back a medal with a top-four placing.
