Deadline Extended For Sugar Beet Deal

Compiled From Wire Services

The closing date for area sugar beet farmers to buy out Amalgamated Sugar Co. has been pushed back to Nov. 15.

Growers have until Nov. 18 to send in money, said Snake River Sugar Co. attorney Brandon Wilson.

“The extra time is helpful,” Wilson said, because growers might appreciate the delay during harvest. The extra time also will help negotiate final details of a loan agreement with St. Paul Bank.

Farmers in southern Idaho, Oregon and Washington are part of a $266 million deal to buy Amalgamated Sugar to form the new Snake River Sugar Co. Backers of the proposal had to get farmers to commit 200,000 acres of sugar beets.
