Shadle Park Highlanders Hope To Repeat Victory Over L-C Tigers

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

Shadle Park will attempt tonight to repeat last year’s victory over Lewis and Clark and at the same time establish itself as an upper echelon Greater Spokane League football team.

The Highlanders and Tigers play the 5 p.m. opener at Albi Stadium, followed by Rogers and Gonzaga Prep.

A year ago, Shadle upset LC 35-16. This year the Tigers are 3-1 in league and Highlanders are 2-1, but coming off a 20-12 loss at Post Falls.

Shadle’s Jeff Lafferty is the league’s fifth leading rusher behind leader Scott McGlockin of Mead, whose 164-yard game gave him 537 on 84 carries.

He moved past Rogers’ Mike Dorton during the unbeaten Panthers’ 35-12 win over the Pirates. Dorton has gained 444 yards.

The Pirates (1-3) are playing to keep playoff hopes alive. Prep is seeking to improve to 3-1 in league.

Second place on line

The Rogers volleyball team has won more matches this year than in any season since 1982. Mead is after its best record since 1989.

The two met Wednesday as part of a series of games that will resolve a three-way claim on second place.

Rogers was 8-2 after a loss to Lewis and Clark. The Panthers (8-3) lost to LC (7-3) Tuesday night prior to its home match with the Pirates.

Best previous records for Rogers were a 9-0 league championship in 1978, 11 wins when the league went to a double round robin in 1980 and 12-4 to share second with Mead in 1982.

In 1989 Mead tied for the league championship with a 13-3 record.

Perfect Panthers dominant

Winning cross country meets isn’t uncommon for Mead. To win all seven flights of a major invitational is unusual.

The Panthers rolled a perfect seven at SunFair last weekend when Jason Fayant turned in the fastest time of 15:23 and his six teammates won their races in times that separated them by little over a minute.

In order the winners were Morgan Thompson, 15:32, Ryan Wiser, 15:53, Damon Ristau, 16:15, Tom Becker, 16:26, Chris Deulen, 16:39 and Josh McLellan, 16:37.

Mead’s girls continue to impress as well, scoring just 21 points to win the race easily over the field.

The Panthers won four individual races, Kelley Mattingly, Annie McCabe, Theresa Mattingly and Cami McVay and had a third place from Katie Pollock in the race among number one runners.
