South African entry London News, ridden by Douglas Whyte, overtook Hong Kong’s Privilege near the finish to win the $641,000 Elizabeth II Cup at the Shatin Race Course in Hong Kong.

London News, a 4-year-old colt, finished the 2,000-meter race in a record time of 2:00-3/5, a half-length ahead of Privilege.

Victor Cooley, a 6-1 shot, charged between horses at the top of the stretch, then outdueled Western Winter to win the $208,600 Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup by a neck at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. The winner was timed in 1:22-2/5 for the seven-furlong sprint.

John Landry, the founder of the Marlboro Cup and a board member of the New York Racing Association, died of cancer at 73.
