Spokane Indians left fielder Dermal Brown was announced as the Northwest League’s most valuable player by the league office on Tuesday.

Brown, in Boise for a crucial NWL series, was batting .333 with 12 home runs and 64 runs batted in as the season reached its final nine games.

Brown leads the league with a .584 slugging percentage and is among the NWL leaders in hits and runs scored.

Brown, of Newburgh, N.Y., was the Kansas City Royals’ No. 1 selection in the 1996 amateur draft.

“Dermal Brown has taken a leadership role since the first day he arrived in Spokane,” said Indians manager Jeff Garber. “As a young player (19), he has made a definite impression with is consistent offensive abilities. Brown has helped us all year, from the first day to the last day.”

Joining Brown on the NWL All-Star team is fellow Indians outfielder Juan LeBron, a first-round draftee in 1995. Right fielder LeBron, leading the league with 27 doubles, is hitting .321 with 44 RBIs.

Boise, which leads Spokane by three games in the North Division standings, placed a league-high four players on the 14-man team. They are shortstop Nelson Castro, catcher Jason Dewey, outfielder Casey Child and pitcher Matt Wise.
