Five years ago: The U.N. Security Council agreed to send 3,000 more troops to Somalia to guard food. About 13,000 people staged an anti-extremist rally in Rostock, Germany, even as right-wingers continued attacks on foreigners.

One year ago: At the Democratic convention in Chicago, President Clinton appealed for a second term, declaring, “Hope is back in America.” The convention also nominated Al Gore for a second term as vice president. Earlier in the day, President Clinton’s chief political strategist, Dick Morris, resigned amid a scandal over his relationship with a prostitute.
