The body of a woman was found after fire ripped through the bedroom of an East Bremerton home.

Fire crews arriving shortly after 7 a.m. Friday found flames and smoke shooting out a window.

The woman’s body was later discovered in a bed, and it appeared she had died from smoke inhalation, said Kitsap County Chief Deputy Coroner Jane Jermy. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday. Her name was not released.

Authorities believe the woman had lived in the house with her husband, who left about 5 a.m. for a duck hunting trip with friends.

The house had no smoke alarm, said acting Bremerton fire chief Al Duke.

“It might not have made a difference, but we’ll never know,” Duke said. “You don’t mind it so much when it’s just the building that gets burned. But you can’t replace a life.”

He said the home is considered a complete loss because of fire and smoke damage as well as electrical wiring problems.
