Jazz Make It 3-0 Against Sonics Malone, Stockton Give Seattle More Doubts

Associated Press

Karl Malone and John Stockton won’t go away.

Utah’s All-Stars turned in vintage performances Wednesday night as the Jazz improved to 3-0 against the Seattle SuperSonics this season with a 99-95 victory.

The Jazz, who lost in the seventh game of the Western Conference finals in Seattle last season, said they didn’t want to read too much into their domination of the Sonics.

“It doesn’t matter, but it might,” said Malone, who scored 26 points, including eight in the final 4:03. “Who knows what would have happened if we would have had the home-court advantage last year.”

“It helps if there’s a tiebreaker, but once the game’s over, it doesn’t mean anything for the future,” added Stockton, who had 13 assists and four steals while Seattle’s Gary Payton had a season-high seven turnovers.

The teams will meet in their last regular-season game Feb. 23 at Salt Lake City.

“Some people are more psychological than I am,” Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. “I just think this means three wins. When you start playing in the playoffs, people try to make a big deal out of that. But I really don’t think it has anything to do with anything.”

Seattle, which lost in six games to Chicago in the NBA Finals last season, lost for the fourth time in six games.

The Sonics finished with a 32-15 record going into the All-Star break. They were 34-12 at the break last season.

Seattle coach George Karl was critical of his team.

“The thing I hate about my team more than anything else is that they’re not good teammates to one another,” he said. “I think we have too much judgment, too much pointing fingers and too much bickering.”

Hersey Hawkins said there are times that will tear you apart or bring you together as a team.

“This is one of those times,” he said. “If I was grading our performance in the first half of the season, it would be a C-plus or a B-minus with lots of room for improvement.”

Shawn Kemp scored 23 points and Gary Payton 22 for the Sonics.

Utah took a 97-93 lead with 15 seconds left on a three-point play by Antoine Carr, who took a pass from Malone and dunked it. He was fouled on the play by Sam Perkins and made the free throw.

Greg Ostertag had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz, who hit 35 of 67 shots for 52 percent.

After Perkins put Seattle ahead 91-90 with a 20-footer with 2:20 left, Utah took the lead for good at 92-91 on a 21-footer by Malone with 1:59 on the clock. After Perkins missed a 3-point attempt with 1:09 on the clock, Jeff Hornacek sank two free throws with 32 seconds left to put Utah ahead 94-91.

Detlef Schrempf, who had 19 points for Seattle, hit a 5-foot bank shot with 27 seconds to go before Carr’s three-point play.
