L.A. Subway Worker Crushed In Tunnel

Associated Press

A subway worker was crushed to death Saturday when a chain holding a 7-foot-wide bucket snapped and pinned him against a tunnel wall beneath Hollywood Boulevard.

Jaime Pasillas, 52, of Los Angeles, was the first worker killed in four years of work on the Metro Rail Red Line.

Pasillas was killed by a 7-foot-wide triangular “skip bucket” used to haul construction tools and debris, said Ed Scannell, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

“One of two chains supporting the bucket snapped, and the bucket swung, pinning the man,” he said.
