After his first hard-court victory since 1990, Thomas Muster moved back into the No. 2 position in the latest ATP Tour rankings while Martina Hingis edged closer to Steffi Graf in the WTA rankings.

Muster defeated Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to win the Dubai Open in the United Arab Emirates, his first hard-court title since Adelaide, Australia in 1990 and his second overall.

Pete Sampras is more than 2,000 ranking points ahead of Muster, who passed Ivanisevic. Michael Chang is fourth, Yevgeny Kafelnikov fifth.

On the women’s side, Hingis won her fourth consecutive tournament this year by beating Anke Huber in the Paris Women’s final. Hingis, who trailed Graf by more than 1,600 points at the start of the year, cut her deficit to 750.
