Essay Contest Winners Explore Diversity

The winners of The Spokesman-Review’s Diversity writing contest transformed conflicts over racial and ethnic equality into moving narratives.

In today’s IN Life section, in honor of Black History Month, we publish the contest’s three winners and five finalists.

Our first-place winner, Joy Peck of Liberty Lake, writes of her childhood discovery of the injustice of discrimination.

Jerrelene Williamson of Spokane, the second-place award winner, describes a painful exclusion and a redemptive gift that has lasted for 49 years.

Jeremy J. Guigino of Spokane, third-place winner, tells a tale of bewilderment on an inter-racial basketball court that’s soon replaced by dawning insight.

Please turn to today’s IN Life section to read these and the other essays.
