Pirate Seniors Go Out In Style

Area women

On the last night of its season, the Whitworth College women’s basketball team orchestrated a grand finale.

The Pirates trailed only in the first minute and went on to beat tournament-bound Pacific Lutheran 85-69 Saturday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. The Lutes (16-8, 12-4), having already secured second place in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges, had nothing to gain by beating fifth-place Whitworth (13-11, 9-7).

And the Pirates’ three starting senior, Jen Tissue, Rebecca Moore and Sherri Northington, had nothing to lose.

Tissue recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. Moore led all scores with 20 points, and Northington added 12.

“I just wanted to get out there and play,” said a teary-eyed Tissue after the game. “(The triple-double) just happened.”

Whitworth, eliminated from the four-team NCIC postseason tournament Friday night, built a quick 16-5 lead in the first 5 minutes and were in control the rest of the way.
