Pope John Paul II on Tuesday named Monsignor Carlos Arthur Sevilla as bishop of the diocese in Yakima.

Sevilla, 61, was most recently vicar general of the archdiocese of San Francisco, where he was born.

A member of the Jesuit religious order, Sevilla was ordained in 1966 and studied at the Catholic Institute in Paris and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He later was an official with the Jesuits in California.

He was named auxiliary bishop in San Francisco in 1988.

Sevilla succeeds Bishop Francis George, 59, who left in May to become archbishop of Western Oregon in Portland.
