Undefeated Wake Survives Virginia

No. 2 Wake Forest survived a second-half field goal drought and its first major scare of the season, getting two bank shots from Tim Duncan over the final 1:07 to edge the Cavaliers 58-54 Wednesday night at Winston-Salem, N.C.

The win gives the Demon Deacons (13-0, 5-0 ACC) their best league start in 34 seasons. Virginia dropped to 11-5, 2-3.

(3) Clemson 67, (11) Maryland 63 At College Park, Md., Terrell McIntyre hit two 3-pointers and Harold Jamison had two baskets in a critical 10-2 run as the Tigers (15-1, 4-0 ACC) held on to beat the Terrapins (14-2, 4-1).

(10) Louisville 92, Houston 78 At Louisville, Ky., freshman Nate Johnson was 11 of 13 from the field and scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Cardinals (14-1, 3-0 Conference USA) to a win over the Cougars (8-6, 0-2).

(13) Duke 87, N.C.-Greensboro 49 At Greensboro, N.C., Jeff Capel scored 19 points to lead five Duke players in double figures as the Blue Devils (13-4) cruised to a win over the Spartans (6-10).

(17) Indiana 66, Northwestern 63 At Evanston, Ill., Neil Reed, benched for the entire first half by Indiana coach Bob Knight, scored 16 of his 18 points over the final 5:23 as the Hoosiers (15-3, 2-2 Big Ten) rallied for a win over the doormat Wildcats (5-10, 0-4).

Knight didn’t say before the game why Reed, Indiana’s second-leading scorer, didn’t start.

(19) BC 81, Fairfield 79 (OT) At New Haven, Conn., Antonio Granger scored on a runner in the lane as time ran out in overtime and the Eagles (12-2) avoided an upset with a win over the Stags (5-7).

Miss. St. 75, (20) Ole Miss 64 At Starkville, Miss., Bart Hyche scored 20 points and all five Bulldogs (8-9, 2-2) starters scored in double digits in a upset victory win over the Rebels (11-4, 3-2).

(23) Texas 86, Texas A&M 76 (OT) At College Station, Texas, Al Coleman’s 3-pointer and Kris Clack’s two free throws gave Texas a lead in the first 45 seconds of overtime and the Longhorns (9-4, 3-1 Big 12) went on to defeat the Aggies (6-8, 0-4).

(22) North Carolna 59, N. C. St. 56 At Chapel Hill, N.C., Antawn Jamison’s spin move and layup with 12 seconds left capped a late rally and helped the Tar Heels (10-4, 1-3 ACC) escape another loss with a win over the Wolfpack (8-5, 0-4).

(25) Texas Tech 67, Oklahoma 62 At Norman, Okla., Cory Carr scored 11 of his 26 points in the final 3 minutes to help the Red Raiders (11-3, 3-1 Big 12) rally for a win over the Sooners (9-4, 1-2).
